   MEET KYLE MCFARLAND Go Back
Name: Kyle McFarland

Name: Kyle McFarland
Nickname: mini
Age: 19
Primary Residence: Colorado Springs, CO
Yrs Climbing: 6
Height: 5’8”
Weight: 135 lbs.

How did you get your nickname? I am pretty much a smaller version of a friend of mine...there for mini me...or mini to others.

How did you start climbing? One of my teachers got me into it when I was 13 or 14, then started working at the local gym and setting and the rest is history.

What’s your most memorable climbing experience? Probably this trip to rifle I took a few years ago to train for my first year at nationals, it left me with some funny stories.

What’s your favorite food? Anything Thai or Italian my friend Kevin has been pampering me with some Thai curry.

What are you reading? Just finished Angels and Demons, and starting the Alexandria Link.

What are you driving? Haha a pretty rad mountain bike.

Do you watch TV? Yea, I am addicted to South Park and scrubs.

Do you climb competitively? For sure, I love to compete. It’s very motivating and you can meet amazing people. But my passion will always be outside on the rock. Every thing feels right.

Do you climb indoors a lot? As a route setter and coach at the local gym, I spend a great deal of my time on plastic, but I will never pass up a chance to go outside.

What other activities do you participate in? I’m an expert at under water basket weaving. Actually that’s not true, I have no skills.

How much do you travel? More and more each year I’m addicted to my nomadic ways. Normally to comps or to get away from work and plastic.

Describe the perfect day? A bit over cast, kind of warm, maybe in the low 70’s, good friends, perfect lines and lots of sending!!!!!

What do you like about climbing? I love every aspect of climbing, meeting great people where ever you go. Stay in shape, the vibe you pick up around other psyched climbers. And knowing you are able to do some thing if you take the time to figure it out and make it work for you.

What’s the most over-hyped area? I think Hueco. It just seems like every one is stoked to pay outrageous costs to go boulder with 500 people. But then again I have never been there.

What’s the most under-hyped area? I could never pick one, I think every town has their little secret crag, with beautiful lines and flowy goodness.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? Well my weakness would have to be, dynamics. I am a very slow and technique intensive climber. Give me a technical, footsy route and I’ll go to town.

Can you do a 1-arm pull up? On a good day I can maybe crank 2 or 3

What’s the best thing about being in a photo shoot? Knowing that a climbing photo shoot is very different than most others, you just hang out with cool people for a day and climb, no posing or half naked models to swell the ego, just climbing.
What’s the worst thing about being in a photo shoot? Being the photographer’s tool, doing the route as many times as they want. And no half naked models haha

what do you like about Bluewater? BlueWater has been around for ever. It is run by amazing people who know whats up and have taken care of me for years. They have always kept between the crux and the ground.

What is your favorite Bluewater product? Either the lightning pro or the eliminator.

Any last words? “Climbing is easier if you just put down your purse and send” by: some one philosophical maybe me…maybe not
